What are the zodiac signs?

The twelve zodiac signs divide the ecliptic — the apparent path of the Sun across the sky — into twelve 30-degree segments. The four elements

Why there are twelve signs

The twelve-sign zodiac has been in use since Babylonian astronomy, roughly 2,500 years ago. It divides the ecliptic into twelve equal segments, each corresponding to a constellation the Sun appears to pass through over the course of a year. The signs are symbolic archetypes — they describe patterns of human experience, not the physical stars themselves. The precession of equinoxes means the constellations have shifted, but Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons rather than the stars.
