Introduction to Numerology
Numerology is the study of numbers as symbols of personality, motivation, and life purpose. It uses your birth date and birth name to calculate a set of core numbers that describe who you are, what drives you, and what challenges you are likely to face.
What numerology calculates
The five core numbers in numerology are: your Life Path Number (derived from your birth date), your Expression Number (from your full birth name), your Soul Urge Number (from the vowels in your name), your Personality Number (from the consonants), and your Birthday Number (from your day of birth). Each number is reduced to a single digit by adding its digits together repeatedly, with the exception of master numbers 11, 22, and 33, which are preserved because they carry amplified significance.
The Pythagorean system
Modern numerology primarily uses the Pythagorean system, which assigns each letter of the alphabet a number from 1 to 9 in sequence: A=1, B=2, C=3 through I=9, then J=1, K=2, and so on. This system is attributed to the Greek mathematician Pythagoras, who believed that numbers were the fundamental building blocks of reality. Whether or not Pythagoras actually developed this system is historically uncertain, but it has been the standard in Western numerology for centuries.
Master numbers
In standard numerology, all numbers are reduced to a single digit between 1 and 9. The exceptions are 11, 22, and 33, which are called master numbers. These carry the qualities of their single-digit reduction (2, 4, and 6 respectively) but at a heightened intensity. A Life Path 11 has the sensitivity of a 2 amplified into intuitive vision. A 22 has the building capacity of 4 expanded to institutional scale. A 33 has the nurturing quality of 6 elevated to a teaching and healing mission. Master numbers bring greater potential and greater pressure.
What numerology can and cannot do
Like astrology, numerology is a symbolic system, not a science. It provides a framework for self-reflection — a language for describing patterns in personality and motivation. It does not predict specific events, diagnose conditions, or determine outcomes. The value of numerology lies in the questions it helps you ask about yourself, not in definitive answers. If a number description resonates, use it. If it does not, move on without concern.
