What are houses?

In astrology, the twelve houses represent different areas of your life — from identity and finances to relationships and career. While signs describe how energy expresses itself, houses describe where in your life that energy shows up. Your house placements are determined by your birth time and location.

The twelve houses

The 1st house governs identity and self-presentation. The 2nd covers money, possessions, and personal values. The 3rd relates to communication, siblings, and local environment. The 4th is home, family, and roots. The 5th covers creativity, romance, and children. The 6th deals with health, daily routines, and work. The 7th is partnerships and marriage. The 8th covers shared resources, intimacy, and transformation. The 9th relates to higher education, travel, and philosophy. The 10th is career and public reputation. The 11th covers community, friendships, and aspirations. The 12th governs the unconscious, solitude, and hidden matters.

How houses are calculated

Houses are determined by the exact time and geographic location of your birth. The degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at your birth becomes your Ascendant (1st house cusp), and the remaining houses are calculated from there. This is why birth time is essential for house placements — without it, the houses cannot be accurately determined. There are several house systems (Placidus, Whole Sign, Equal), and each divides the sky slightly differently.

Planets in houses

When a planet falls in a particular house, it brings its energy to that area of your life. Mars in the 10th house, for example, brings drive and assertiveness to your career. Venus in the 7th house emphasizes harmony and beauty in partnerships. Empty houses are normal — they do not mean that area of life is absent, only that it does not have a planet adding extra emphasis. The sign on the house cusp and its ruling planet still describe how that area of life operates for you.
