What does compatibility actually mean?

Astrological compatibility goes far beyond matching Sun signs. Real compatibility analysis (called synastry) compares two people's full birth charts to see how their planets interact with each other. Some connections create harmony, others create tension, and the most interesting relationships usually have both.

Beyond Sun sign matching

The popular notion that certain signs are "compatible" and others are not is a massive oversimplification. Sun sign compatibility describes only one layer of the relationship. Your Moon signs determine emotional compatibility — how you each process feelings and what you need to feel safe. Venus signs describe how you give and receive love. Mars signs affect how you handle conflict and desire. Two people with "incompatible" Sun signs might have deeply harmonious Moon or Venus connections that make the relationship work beautifully.

What synastry actually looks at

Synastry overlays two birth charts to see which planets in one chart form aspects to planets in the other. Venus conjunct someone's Moon, for example, often creates a natural emotional warmth between two people. Mars square someone's Saturn can create frustration around ambition and boundaries. The strongest connections typically involve one person's inner planets (Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars) making tight aspects to the other person's inner planets.

Tension is not bad

Some of the most enduring relationships have significant squares and oppositions in synastry. Tension creates chemistry, attraction, and growth. A relationship with only trines and sextiles might feel comfortable but lack spark. The key question is not whether there is tension, but whether both people are willing to work with it. Astrology can identify the dynamics, but it cannot predict whether two people will choose to show up for each other.

Composite charts

A composite chart combines two birth charts into a single chart that represents the relationship itself — as if the relationship were its own entity. The composite Sun shows the relationship's core purpose. The composite Moon describes its emotional tone. This technique is less about predicting whether two people will get along and more about understanding what the relationship itself wants to become.

The limits of compatibility analysis

Astrology can describe the dynamics between two people with surprising accuracy, but it cannot account for emotional maturity, communication skills, shared values, or willingness to grow. Two people with perfect synastry can still have a terrible relationship if one of them refuses to be honest. Compatibility analysis is a tool for understanding, not a verdict.
